Every aspect of design and manufacturing at Urban Woods is done with the least Environmental impact possible and in the most Sustainable manner. At the core of the process is reclaimed wood which is a true “urban wood” as it comes from old, local buildings in Los Angeles. The source of the wood is local, thus eliminating the need for imported materials and excessive shipping impact on the Environment.
Environmental Furniture Design is often overlooked as an important part of the sustainability of the furniture manufacturing process. Proper design takes many factors into consideration. The materials sourced, dimensions that minimize waste, design and function longevity (eliminating obsolescence), finish, and durability.

The best wood finishes for the environment are “water based” meaning that the solvent is water instead of petroleum and there is a significant reduction in “off gassing” during the drying process. The use of low VOC finishes helps reduce indoor air pollution and help maintain healthy indoor air quality.

Finally, the use of reclaimed wood which was originally milled over 100 years ago, results in a superior product due to the fact that it is more durable, with tighter grain patterns, resistant to bugs and has a natural aged patina with a distinctive look that is timeless. Reclaiming superior wood is not only better for Environmental Furniture Design but it eliminates the harm caused by deforestation and and the waste caused by disposal of previously used wood.

Custom Tables go to Great Lengths in Dining and Conference Rooms

10 foot long custom kirei table is made if reclaimed wood, reclaimed sorghum stalk and a polished nickel base

The latest custom dining tables, conference tables, and console tables are designed and built by Urban Woods from reclaimed wood, kirei, and steel. The most common size for the Hazen tables ordered is 10 feet long. The new Hazen table is made of rough sawn, reclaimed wood with hand wrought steel legs used for both dining and conference rooms around the country. The Hazen Kirei Table (shown above) has a top made from reclaimed Sorghum finished with a bright white wash finish and can be seen on showroom floors such as Rum Runner Home in East Hampton, New York and HD Buttercup in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The new Hazen Table has been unveiled at HD Buttercup in Los Angeles. Reclaimed wood furniture never looked so good. The new iconic table comes in lengths up to 10 feet and beyond for custom orders. The unique leg shape allows unobstructed seating all the way around the table and a five-step process seals the wood while preserving the rough patina and showing off the beautiful grain. The final coat is hand-applied wax.

The sleek, minimalistic legs are shaped from hand-forged steel that is then hand polished and plated.

The top is made of beautiful, rough sawn reclaimed wood from local Los Angeles sources and is available in five different eco-friendly finishes. Table tops can also be custom ordered in reclaimed Sorghum.

The amalgamation of ancient rough timber with a subtle raw complexion and elemental hand shaped steel, compose a raw, organic combination in the Hazen Collection available now at HD Buttercup.
